What does it take to find the courage to live an ordinary life?
Elling and Kjell Bjarne have spent years living in an institution. Now they’ve been given an apartment in Oslo — and two years to prove they can live independently.
Elling is sensitive, poetry-writing and terrified of the telephone. Kjell Bjarne is a warm-hearted mechanic who has never quite mastered the art of talking to women.
Together they must negotiate shopping, neighbours, friendship, romance and the bewildering business of everyday life — and discover that the world outside is stranger, funnier and more generous than either of them dared to hope.
